Yesterday it was my pleasure to attend the signing of a bill to boost tax relief for working families in Illinois.

Senate Bill 400 doubles the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) over two years, saving low-income workers an extra $105 million per year.

SB 400 was sponsored by House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie...

...and Senator Toi Hutchinson.

”The tax relief contained in Senate Bill 400 will benefit every person who files a tax return in Illinois,” Sen. Hutchinson said. ”Working families for too long have had to deal with increasing expenses and stagnant wages. This legislation is an opportunity to provide meaningful tax relief.”

I have always admired my parents' relationship. They are truly life partners: best friends who dearly love each other. Life has thrown them many hardships along with countless blessings. Through it all, their love for each other has been steadfast.

Last week, I had the rare chance to visit my parents at the place they first met, Furman University. Here they are at that same old place, still laughing, still loving.

She came to my parents' house the morning after a big thunderstorm...

...when she was just a tiny kitty.

Now Stormy is all grown up...

...but she is still a tiny kitty.

Every morning, she wakes up early.

She waits for my dad on the back porch.

And the two of them, Stormy and Dad, go back to the garden together.

Fair Care

Yesterday morning, it was my honor and privilege to be invited to a press conference held by Illinois State Senator Iris Martinez and the Fair Care Coalition. Senator Martinez challenged the state hold nonprofit hospitals accountable to their charitable obligations.

Senator Martinez was joined by representatives from the Fair Care Coalition including Darryl Campbell, a leader at the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.
